Drunk Driving Tests

There are numerous ways to evaluate possible drunk drivers. Police Officers can use both Chemical and Field Sobriety tests in order to test a drivers balance, coordination and blood alcohol content. Chemical tests include breath, blood and urine tests while Field Sobriety Tests include the one leg stand, walk and turn, and horizontal nystagmus tests.

Breathalyzer tests are among the most inaccurate. These tests don’t actually test the blood alcohol concentration (BAC), which requires a blood sample, but instead estimate BAC indirectly. Due to their inaccuracy some states don’t give breathalyzers as an option but instead use only blood or urine tests.

Breathalyzer tests can vary based on the size of the machine as well as environmental factors such as temperature or electrical interferences. The test can also fluctuate on readings due to the machines ability to read other types of alcohol, not just those measured in alcoholic beverages.
